Hosted by The Homeless Online Art Bazaar (HOAB) of Chicago the “What Kind of Village are we Art Competition?” The Art Competition is open to all students enrolled in high schools and colleges in Illinois. Participants do not need to be enrolled in an art class. There is no entry fee and submitted work can be from any of the following categories but must be 2 dimensional, original works: ceramics, drawing, printmaking, painting or mixed media. A maximum of three, two-dimensional works will be accepted per applicant. HOAB reserves the right to reproduce all works for the purpose of fundraising and promotions. Commendable works are eligible to win:

  • Letters of Commendations for College admissions and professional opportunities

  • All students submitting a work of art will receive a certificate of participation

  • Students in “Top 25” will receive a certificate indicating that level of success

  • Students in “Top 10” will receive a certificate indicating that level of success

  • Top 3 Winners in all categories will receive:

    • Winner Certificate

    • Winners will be displayed on our website:

    • Photo with dignitaries attending the art event

    • Winners will be displayed at Blick Art Materials Store on south State Street in January 2020

    • Receive gift certificates from Blick Art Materials

      • 1st prize $300

      • 2nd prize $200

      • 3rd prize $100

  • Display of their Art at




High school and college students holding a citizenship of any country are encouraged to apply.


Winner Notification

The 2019 application is open from August 1, 2019 - November 15, 2019. The winner will be notified by email on December 1, 2019. Winner must provide their image to HOAB by December 7th and HOAB will publish the winners on our site December 8th.


Image Requirements

Artwork must be submitted as a digital file in JPEG, PSD. PDF. ( BMP. RAW, or TIF files are not accepted). Images must be clear and cropped without unrelated background.

Our theme is: ‘What kind of village are we?’ All work must relate to the subject of homelessness and or its solution(s). 


Art that is made on a two-dimensional surface will be eligible for the competition. We are not accept 3 dimensional work at this time.

Examples (including but not limited to): Pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, crayon, scratchboard, marker, etc.

Special Instructions: Drawing made from published photographs will not be accepted.

Submissions: You can upload one image for each category.

Mixed Media

Category Description: Art made using more than one medium.

Examples (including but not limited to): Collage, assemblage, cut paper, fabric, fiber-based art, etc.


Examples (including but not limited to): Oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, tempera, ink, encaustic, fresco, spray paint, etc. applied on canvas, canvas board, paper or any flat surface.

Special Instructions: Drawing made from published photographs are not acceptable.

Submissions: You can upload one image for each submission.

Wall Sculpture

Example (including but not limited to): clay, metal, wood, found material etc.


Special Instructions: For sculptural pieces, two photos - one frontal and one side view of the same piece may be submitted.
